How to Build a Tricycle for Adults

Adult tricycles offer a couple of advantages over traditional two-wheeled bikes. First, while riding them they exert less pressure on muscles and joints which is particularly conducive for people with knee-related problems. And another great advantage they offer is the riders of these trikes can carry more goods than a bicycle.

While buying a high-end tricycle is not an expensive purchase building a tricycle is not a difficult task if the process involves transforming a current bicycle to a trike or reprocessing different parts of an old bicycle into a tricycle.
In this article, we will teach you how to assemble different parts of an old bicycle to make a tricycle for adults.

Before starting

You might think that you should have good expertise in welding to build one such trike. Wrong. What you need in reality is an effective workspace which is filled with useful power tools.

A few essential tools you need to gather which includes a hacksaw, a Dremel, and one unit of a power drill. Besides, you will also need some other tools like a chain whip, an Allen key set, and a chain tool.

When you gather these things, you might wonder where you will get an old bicycle from which you will make a trike? After all, it is the most essential thing. In this respect, we suggest you not search for an old bicycle here and there and waste your precious time. Instead,  follow the easiest way. Purchase not one but three models of old bicycles. They will be quite inexpensive.

While purchasing these bikes, make sure that two units of bikes come with the same frame size. It is required to build the rear side of your adult tricycle.
However, don’t think that you need to gather all the old parts of three bicycles. So, keep your head cool. The assembling process will not be so complicated.

The front

You may already assume to some extent that constructing the front side of a bike is the easiest thing to do. Exactly. It requires only using the front of an old bicycle. The front section of an old bicycle remains functional for a long time because two important components- steering and front brakes were built heavily and do not suffer extensive wear and tear over time.

Another advantage of using the front section of an old bicycle is cutting the seat post from another bike will not become so necessary. As long as you keep the front section of an old bike intact, you can use the seat post in your newly built tricycle as well.

When you choose the front side of an old bicycle to use in your newly assembled tricycle, you need to predetermine the number of gears you want on your trikes and choose flat handlebars instead of traditional drop bars. Keep in mind that once assembled, changing a feature like the design of the handlebars or shifting mechanism of a tricycle would be quite difficult at a later time.
Build the rear section of your tricycle
The rear part of your tricycle will be constructed from the rear triangles of two old bicycles that have similar frame designs.

While building the rear section of your tricycle, a hacksaw will be pretty useful since you will need to perform different cutting tasks.
