How to Fix a Bike Bell

It may happen that your bike bell is not ringing anymore. A premium quality bell is a essential bike accessories. But mal-function of bell like stopping making sound may happen any time.  Don’t worry. You can fix it with a few basic tools and not spend so much time on it. In this article, we will discuss how to fix a bike bell.

Before starting fixing your bell, first determine what type of bell it is. There are two types of bike bells out there- one comes with a simple configuration and the other one’s configuration is a bit complex.

The bell with the simple configuration comes with a tab inside of it that hits a metal bell. The complex configuration bell is designed with a rotating gear inside of it. When this gear rotates, it produces a ring sound.

The Bell that Has a Simple Design Produces a Ding Type of Sound.

A  gear style bell functions better when it comes to sending warning signals to pedestrians since it produces a prolonged ring. This style of the bell is particularly ideal for young kids if they ride the bike in a place where they encounter many pedestrians. However, if the streets are a little bit desolate, any type of bell will work.

A bell with less complex design has one great advantage. And that advantage is if the bell does not work anymore, it can easily be repaired.

Now We Will Discuss Repairing Both Types of Bells-Tab Style and Gear Style.

Fixing a Tab Style Bell

The first thing you need to check is whether the tab is striking the metal bowl. A couple of things may stop the tab hitting the metal bowl. These things are that the plastic arm could have gotten loose or a broken or loose spring could prevent the tab from hitting the metal bowl.

If a broken plastic arm causes the problem, bad news. You have nothing to do. You have to buy a new bell.

Fixing a gear style bell

The most probable reason for which a gear style bell is not working is perhaps one or two gears of the bell is not working.

The problem could also originate from the lever as well. A loose lever will not ring the bell.

Below are Simple Steps to Fix any Type of Bell

  • Twist the metal bowl counterclockwise to open it.
  • Examine the inside of the bell.
  • Move the lever and carefully oversee how different gears move.
  • If you notice a loose gear, try it securing it back in place.
If you see that the arm is loose and it does not spring back into place when you press it, examine the mechanism that

If the problem is that the arm is loose and doesn’t spring back into place when you press it, check the mechanism that keeps the arms functioning.

Other common issues that may cause the bell not working

If the process of oxidation causes the development of rust on the metal bowl, the bell will not make a high -pitch sound.

However, removing rust is not a difficult process. Soak a clean, thin piece of cloth with white vinegar, baking soda, or chemical rust and rub it gently over the rust affected area. The rust will be removed instantly.

Another simple solution to avoid rust issues is by using an aluminum bike bell. Since Aluminium is a rust-proof alloy, the bell components will never develop rust and thus will not stop making a sound.

Dirt and debris:

Another two things that also cause malfunctioning of different components of a bike bell is dirt and debris. Open the bell and clean off different components of it like gears, spring, and metal rings. If the bell is a tab style bell, the places where you find dirt is on the plastic tab and spring.
