How to Fit a Toddler Bike Helmet

Cycling is a fun and refreshing experience. If you have young kids, you also want to share this experience with them. But for safe riding, as an adult, you must know that wearing a good quality helmet is a must. It is also illegal riding a bike without a helmet.

But, the only problem with a helmet is if it does not fit well with your child’s head, it will wobble on her head and will make her riding much uncomfortable instead of getting sheer fun. And most importantly, the helmet will not serve its primary purpose-keeping her head safe from brain injury.

If you go to a  bike helmet shop, the seller will sell you a certain size helmet packed in an attractive box and without giving you any further instruction regarding how to put this helmet on your child’s helmet. The box that is holding the helmet also perhaps contains an instruction booklet. But, chances are a little that you will hardly read this book.

So, here is a useful article where we will show you how to fit your child bike’s helmet in a step by step process.

Step One

Wrap the string or tape measure encompassing her head above the ears and eyebrows.

Step Two

Based on this measurement select a helmet that has the corresponding size. Each of the helmets mentions its size in its description. You will find this description in the helmet itself.

Step Three

Place the helmet on her head. It should cover most of her forehead. The frontal lobe of the brain is situated in the forehead. So, protecting her forehead is immensely important.

Step Four

Hold your middle and forefinger together and place them above her eyebrows. If the fingers touch the helmet that means it's a  nice fit.

Step Five

Use the bands that come with the helmet to adjust the helmet to make it stable on her head. Stable means the helmet will not move side to side or back and forth.

Step Six

After bands, next comes straps. You need to adjust them in a way so that they don’t fit too firmly.

Step Seven

Make sure that straps should stay below her ears.

Step Eight

Check the tightness of the strap. Try to insert one finger between the strap and her chin. If you can it is ok. Now try two fingers. If the space between her chin and straps allows two fingers to pass through that means tightening is not enough. Fasten the strap a little more.

 Step Nine

Now check how the helmet fits comfortably with her head. Push the helmet back on her head. If it moves more than an inch, fasten the strap in front of her ear. Push the helmet forward. If it moves more than an inch fastens the strap at the back of the ear.

Step Ten

Finally, tell her to shake her head in all directions. If the helmet moves, fasten it a bit more.
