How Should Road Cycling Shoes Fit

Do you know wearing a pair of shoes can improve your cycling performance? Yes, you can ride a bicycle wearing only a pair of sneakers? But, that is a clumsy way of bike riding. The right process is to wear a pair of cycling shoes while riding a bike.

Wearing a pair of shoes help riders to make upward and downward pedal strokes more efficiently and achieve greater speed with less effort. A perfect fit for cycling shoes also lessen experiencing foot pain and prevent the shoes from detaching from the feet while riding a bike.

Your type of cycling shoes needs to match the type of bike you are riding. It means there is a relation between the type of bike you are riding and the pair of shoes you need to wear with it. So, the equation is simple

If you are riding a mountain bike, for example, you need to wear a pair of cycling shoes that have recessed cleats. Such a pair of shoes are ideal for walking a short distance comfortably and also a good choice for commuters.

If you ride a road bike, you need to choose a pair of shoes that have protruding cleats. Wearing these shoes is not convenient for walking but provides great support for power while participating in a race.

When you will get a primary idea of what type of shoes you need to wear to match with your bikes then consider some other factors. Below we have discussed those factors

Length

Unlike running shoes, cycling shoes do not require extra space in front of cyclists' toes. While designing running shoes, the designers of these shoes keep extra spaces in front of the toes to prevent toes from heating the front end of shoes. Keeping a few millimetres of spaces between your toes and front end of the insole would be enough.

Width
The location of the width of a pair of cycling shoes does not refer to a specific region of the shoes. Some models of shoes have it at the base of the toes while others have it at the front-most portion. However, the width of the shoes is an important factor since this region is the area that connects the foot to the pedal and where the cyclist applies force to power pedals.

Another important thing is there should not be much space on the sides of the shoes. Leaving extra space there would facilitate side to side motion of shoes which causes loosening the grip on the pedals and leading to an accident.

Fastening
The laces of the shoes do not tie in such a way that it compresses the feet tightly. In other words, the fitting of the shoes needs to be snug fit which means the shoes need to fit not too tightly or not too loosely. If the shoes clamp your feet, the feeling will not be a comfortable experience while loose-fitting might cause slipping off the shoes while you are riding the bike.
